Blooming into Spring

Today began the start of peer taught lessons. The focus of one of the two lessons was to learn about Georgia  O'Keeffe's artwork of flowers and the intensity she created her paintings with. She usually created a close up view of whatever flower she chose to draw. We created our own Georgia O'Keefe inspired work of art. Here is the procedure of the project:

  1. Students will draw a flower of their choosing with crayon or oil pastel. They need to press down heavily when drawing.
  2. The drawings need to take up the whole page.
  3. Once the drawing is complete, students with go over their drawing with watered-down black tempra paint.
  4. The students will wipe off excess paint mixture with their hands or a paper towel. Make sure to wipe in the direction of the flower petal.

**Extension Activity**

This kind of project would fit nicely with a Social Studies lesson. As a class, the focus could be on a certain country or region of the world. Students could research the type of flora found in that particular area. They could create their own Georgie O'Keefe masterpiece and present it to the class.
