Going on a Safari

Today in class, we went on a safari. Not literally, but artistically. We designed a project using colored pencils and "red-vision" glasses. The procedure was designed for 1st grade, so it would be easy to replicate. Here is the procedure:

The "Red-Vision" Glasses

  1. Students fold a 4 x 12 inch in half and trace the glasses pattern.
  2. Students cut out the glasses and glue them to the red cellophane.
  3. Let dry in a safe place.

The Safari

  1. Students need to draw an animal in blue colored pencil, pressing moderately hard.
  2. Students then go over there blue animal with various repeating pattern using warm colors (red, yellow, orange, pink, etc.). The blue needs to be moderately covered up by the warm colors. Make sure it is warm colors so that the red cellophane can blend with them.
  3. Have students look at their drawings using the "red-vision" glasses.
  4. They should be able to see their blue animal they drew.

** Extension Activity**

Educators could easy implement this project into any area of curriculum. I think it would be fun to implement in with reading and learning new vocabulary. Students could write the vocabulary words in blue and then cover it up with warm colored patterns. As a class you could play a definition game and go on a safari for the correct answer.
